In the 5th Test between Australia and India at the Sydney Cricket Ground, Australia gained an early advantage, dismissing India for 185 on the first day. Scott Boland spearheaded the Australian bowling attack with impressive figures of 4 for 31, exploiting the green pitch to trouble the Indian batsmen.

India’s Batting Struggles

India’s innings faced challenges from the outset. KL Rahul was the first to depart, scoring just 4 runs before falling to Mitchell Starc. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill attempted to stabilize the innings but were unable to build substantial partnerships. Virat Kohli, after a controversial moment where a catch was deemed not out, managed 17 runs before being dismissed by Boland. Rishabh Pant top-scored with 40 runs, providing some resistance, but the team ultimately succumbed to Australia’s disciplined bowling attack.

Boland’s Bowling Brilliance

Scott Boland’s performance was instrumental in Australia’s dominance. His consistent line and length, combined with the pitch’s assistance, made scoring difficult for the Indian batsmen. Boland’s ability to generate seam movement and maintain pressure resulted in crucial breakthroughs, including the wickets of Jaiswal and Kohli.

Australia’s Response

In response, Australia ended the day at 9 for 1, with Jasprit Bumrah claiming the wicket of Usman Khawaja in the final delivery of the day. The match remains finely poised, with Australia trailing by 176 runs and looking to build a substantial first-innings lead on the second day.

Key Moments of the Day

• Rohit Sharma’s Absence: In a surprising move, Rohit Sharma opted to rest, leading to Jasprit Bumrah captaining the side.

• Controversial Catch: A contentious moment arose when Virat Kohli was given not out after a catch by Steven Smith was reviewed and deemed to have touched the ground.

• Bumrah’s Late Strike: Bumrah provided a late boost for India by dismissing Khawaja with the last ball of the day, ensuring the match remains competitive.

Looking Ahead

As the Test progresses, Australia’s batting lineup will aim to capitalize on the platform set by their bowlers, while India’s bowlers will seek early wickets to regain control. The second day promises to be crucial in determining the direction of this closely contested match.
